Scrum Day Madison is October 23rd!

September 24, 2024

Scrum Day Madison is a month away! Even though Madison is a smaller town, this conference draws speakers from all over the world and it’s in my backyard. I had a blast attending last year, showcasing my book and appearing in one of the conference’s many panel discussions. This year, I’ll be back to talk about self-selection and so will a lot of other great speakers. If you’re in the area, you should join me! I’ve got a discount code at the bottom of this article that gives you 25% off.

What is Scrum Day Madison?

Scrum Day is a one-day agile software development conference that takes place in Madison, WI at the Alliant Energy Center. It was started last year by Mary Iqbal, Scrum Trainer & CEO, of a company that might have the best name ever: Rebel Scrum. I expected the conference to be small and local, but I was pleasantly surprised by the caliber of the speakers. I met Gunther Verheyan, author of the book Scrum: A Pocket Guide and really enjoyed a talk by David Pereira who came all the way from Germany to talk about Bullshit Management vs Product Management. It was a hilarious talk.

And speaking of great entertainment, we also got to hear Chad Beier of WI Agility perform several of his scrum-themed parodies between sessions.

Deliver Products with Value

This year, the theme is “deliver products with value”, so most of the talks will have something to do with product delivery. There’s a brand new speaker line-up for this year, which includes some more big names. One of the most memorable talks I’ve ever seen was by Troy Magennis, who mathematically proved that for every dependency a team has, it increases the chances that they deliver late by 50%. It was an amazing talk. He’ll be here talking about Agile Forecasting & Data.

Come Learn About Self-Selection

I feel that you can’t deliver great, valuable products without great teams. That’s why I’ll be there talking about self-selection. If you have not yet heard me talk at length about how transformational self-selection can be, boy are you in for a treat. Definitely stop by my talk if you can. It might change the way you think about forming teams forever.

Overwhelmed by AI? It’s OK to Watch for a While

There’s a particular flavor of anxiety that’s causing us all to believe that if we’re not using AI all day every day we’re falling hopeless behind. If you’re overwhelmed, resistant, skeptical, or just genuinely uninterested in the AI hype cycle right now, I want to say something that you might not be hearing very often: That’s okay. You’re going to be fine. And here’s why I think that.

We’re Looking for Partners for UW-Madison’s CS Capstone — Could That Be You?

One of the things I’m most proud of during my career is creating and running UW-Madison’s Computer Sciences Capstone course (CS 620). Every semester, hundreds of computer science Seniors work in teams of four to six on real software projects for real organizations, using agile development practices. And every semester, I need great partner organizations to make it happen. Last year, we had 27 amazing partners and we’re looking to grow quite a bit to accommodate 40% more students for the 2026-2027 school year.

What I Learned at the Global Agility + Innovation Summit: AI, Judgement, and the Future of Leadership

I just returned from the Global Agility + Innovation Summit, a one-day leadership conference in DC hosted by Sanjiv Augustine and his team at LitheSpeed. It was a day packed with sharp thinking, genuine conversation, and the kind of energy that only happens when a room full of practitioners who actually care about the work they’re doing get together. Here are some conference highlights.
