GE Healthcare Capstone Article

March 25, 2025

I developed, run, and teach UW-Madison’s Computer Science Capstone program. In this course, students work in groups of 4-5 on real-world projects sponsored by corporate or non-profit partners. I try to give students as much “on-the-job experience” as I possibly can in an academic setting. Each semester, the program grows. Each year I am amazed by the generosity of our partners and what the students build for them.

N+1 Institute

Last year, GE Healthcare joined the Capstone class as part of a new foundation, the N+1 Institute. They are the founding members of the institute and as part of their work with the university, they have joined the Capstone course as a partner for the past three semesters.

GE Healthcare Partnership

Last semester, GE Healthcare had three teams of students working on two different projects related to their patient device business. They followed one student very closely, Diana Kotsonis, and wrote a wonderful article about the program, Diana, and the project itself. If you’re interested in learning more about the Capstone program, GE Healthcare, or the N+1 Institute, check out the article here.

I really enjoy working with the GE Healthcare team for a couple of reasons. They come up with great projects for the students; projects that allow them to make a real difference in patients’ lives. The GE Healthcare mentors love interacting with their teams. GE Healthcare is located in the Milwaukee area and yet each time we host our partners in the class, they happily drive the hour and a half to Madison to participate in-person. It’s always wonderful to see them and to see how well they interact with their teams.

Becoming a Capstone Partner

If you’d like to learn more about the course and/or how to become a partner, please contact me. I’d be happy to talk with you about Fall 2025 and Spring 2026 opportunities!

Overwhelmed by AI? It’s OK to Watch for a While

There’s a particular flavor of anxiety that’s causing us all to believe that if we’re not using AI all day every day we’re falling hopeless behind. If you’re overwhelmed, resistant, skeptical, or just genuinely uninterested in the AI hype cycle right now, I want to say something that you might not be hearing very often: That’s okay. You’re going to be fine. And here’s why I think that.

We’re Looking for Partners for UW-Madison’s CS Capstone — Could That Be You?

One of the things I’m most proud of during my career is creating and running UW-Madison’s Computer Sciences Capstone course (CS 620). Every semester, hundreds of computer science Seniors work in teams of four to six on real software projects for real organizations, using agile development practices. And every semester, I need great partner organizations to make it happen. Last year, we had 27 amazing partners and we’re looking to grow quite a bit to accommodate 40% more students for the 2026-2027 school year.

What I Learned at the Global Agility + Innovation Summit: AI, Judgement, and the Future of Leadership

I just returned from the Global Agility + Innovation Summit, a one-day leadership conference in DC hosted by Sanjiv Augustine and his team at LitheSpeed. It was a day packed with sharp thinking, genuine conversation, and the kind of energy that only happens when a room full of practitioners who actually care about the work they’re doing get together. Here are some conference highlights.
