This was my second time speaking at the conference, which is hosted by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nvisia.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NVISIA<\/a>. This year there were over 500 attendees from the greater Milwaukee area and broader WI areas. I always meet some great people at this conference and get a few important insights as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Preparing the Next Generation of Agile Software Engineers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/stevelueck\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Steve Lueck<\/a>, <em>SVP at Associated Bank<\/em>, and I spoke about the <a href=\"https:\/\/amberrfield.com\/staging\/1483\/2022-computer-science-capstone\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Computer Science Capstone class<\/a> I teach at UW-Madison. I talked about how the class is organized and Steve did an amazing job talking about what it&#8217;s like to be a partner for the class. You can check-out our slides in full here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div data-wp-interactive=\"core\/file\" class=\"wp-block-file\"><object data-wp-bind--hidden=\"!state.hasPdfPreview\" hidden class=\"wp-block-file__embed\" data=\"https:\/\/amberrfield.com\/staging\/1483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/ProdCon2023_AssociatedBankCapstone_Final.pdf\" type=\"application\/pdf\" style=\"width:100%;height:600px\" aria-label=\"Embed of ProdCon2023_AssociatedBankCapstone_Final.\"><\/object><a id=\"wp-block-file--media-20889349-ae14-4f71-8da1-311cdcecb57e\" href=\"https:\/\/amberrfield.com\/staging\/1483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/ProdCon2023_AssociatedBankCapstone_Final.pdf\">ProdCon2023_AssociatedBankCapstone_Final<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/amberrfield.com\/staging\/1483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/ProdCon2023_AssociatedBankCapstone_Final.pdf\" class=\"wp-block-file__button wp-element-button\" download aria-describedby=\"wp-block-file--media-20889349-ae14-4f71-8da1-311cdcecb57e\">Download<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other Insights from ProdCon<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I was able to catch two others sessions at the conference. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Product Strategy<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There was a great panel discussion called &#8220;Shaping Product Strategy &amp; Measuring Business Impact&#8221;. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/andrew-kielbasa-a3332818\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Andrew Kielbasa<\/a> moderated for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/hebba-mahmoud-b94b6728\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hebba Mahmoud<\/a> (TruStage &amp; Former Product Owner of Innovation at CUNA Mutual), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/shalini-badhwar-88b6291a\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Shalini Badhwar<\/a> (Direct Supply), and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/andrewlichey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Andrew Lichey<\/a> (IFS). They underscored the need to fail fast and cut through right to your customers to understand what they truly care about. They also discussed the importance of leaning on a good mission and north star when doing annual planning. Lichey is at a PE-owned firm just like I am right now and his answers really resonated with me. There are three questions his team asks when starting their strategy conversations:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Is the market real?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Can we compete in that market?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is it worth it? Is there enough revenue there?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The panel ended with the reminder that products are only successful once people are successfully using the product.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Products are successful once people are successfully using the product.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Women in Tech<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the things that the conference organizers did really well was have everyone come together for a session on women in tech. I&#8217;m sure the guys in the room were less thrilled than me, but I loved having that conversation with everyone at the conference &#8212; not just the other women like me who feel the absence of other women so acutely. Women fill only 19% of C-level assignments. We feel like we need to layer on degrees and certifications before being noticed. No wonder we drop out of the workforce faster than men. It&#8217;s literally harder for us to keep up. The panelists, who were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/shalini-badhwar-88b6291a\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Shalini Badhwar<\/a> (Direct Supply), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/lvideko\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lori Videkovich<\/a> (Generac), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/lindsay-winn-a906b45\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lindsay Winn<\/a> (Molson Coors), and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/damini-d-881811\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Damini Dhawal<\/a> (AIG) all did a great job! Here&#8217;s some of the great pieces of advice that I took away from the session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Keep encouraging girls in middle and high school to go into math &amp; science<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Remind women that they are smart enough to be in tech (society tells us the opposite)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ask for opportunities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Come to the table prepared<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Know your business (not just the tech side of the business)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Seek mentors and sponsors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Authenticity is important &#8212; we&#8217;ve got enough men leading like men and we need more women leading like women<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There are plenty of people out there looking to sponsor women-led technical companies and organizations helping women<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Always a great conference!
